Figure Skating is a blend of performance art and athletics. My sculpture is inspired by that wonderful blend. I use photographs and video of TV performances to capture the form of the skating movement. The armature is measured and welded together. The pieces are sculpted in clay, a mold is made, cast in forton (a hard form of plaster), and then the skate blade is welded to the base. Painting the piece is the last step in the process.

The above sculpture was modeled in clay, fired, assembled (the legs were glued to the body), and then painted. The skate blades were welded to screws mounted in the base, the finished sculpture piece was glued to the blades, and the white resin was added to the reservoir in the base. The base was milled by Ron Spaulding at Boland-Maloney of Louisville, Ky.

I used the same process described above to complete the Ina Bauer Move sculpture.
